Retinal Surgery and Procedures

Repair of Macular Holes

Vitreous traction, the shrinking of the vitreous gel and subsequent pulling effect on the retina can lead to a macular hole, a hole in the central part of the retina where fine vision occurs. The treatment for macular hole is normally vitrectomy accompanied by gas injection to allow the macula to remain in place and for the hole to close and heal. Once again, as with other gas injections, the patient is required to assume a face-down position for a period of at least 7 to14 days. As with other retinal complications, all patients with macular hole repair will not have improved vision and prognosis should be discussed with your surgeon.
